The Amon Carter Museum was established through the generosity of Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879–1955) to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell; to collect, preserve, and exhibit the finest examples of American art; and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications, and programs devoted to the study of American art. The Carter houses one of the nation’s preeminent collections of American art, from works by the early nineteenth-century artist-explorers through those of the mid-twentieth-century modernists and up to the work of contemporary photographers. The museum also holds one of the most comprehensive collections of work by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell.

The museum’s education department offers a variety of free tours, lectures and programs. Monthly programs include Target Family Fun Days and Sharing the Past Through Art. For more information, please visit our website.

The Carter is committed to helping all visitors enjoy its exhibitions of American art through accessible facilities and programs.
There is a designated barrier-free entrance near accessible parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability permits. Both the entrance and parking locations are on Lancaster Avenue, on the museum’s south side. This parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wheelchairs are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis; simply ask any museum Gallery Attendant. All floors are accessible by elevator. The Carter is also equipped with accessible restrooms, drinking fountains, and public telephones. Complimentary assistive listening devices are available for use during public programs or guided tours. Ask the manager of the program you are attending for help with these devices.

Assistive listening devices are generously provided by Woodard Insurance, L.L.P., and Joan A. Wells.

Barbara Crane: Challenging Vision

Inner CirclesOn exhibit February 14 - May 10, 2009

Take a tour of this influential artist-teacher’s career, from her internationally heralded early studies of human form through her chronicle of Chicago city life to her recent explorations of nature. The exhibition reveals Crane to be a quintessential experimenter who, for more than sixty years, has been stretching the boundaries of photography. Through single images, sequences, grids, and scrolls that range widely in size from intimate to grand, she delivers photographs that surprise us, unleash wonder, and encourage us to experiment ourselves.
