The Upstairs Gallery began in 1967 when Eleanor Grace Martin and her artist friends started a co-op gallery in an upstairs space in downtown Arlington. When the city bought the block where the gallery rented space to build the public library, Mrs. Martin moved the gallery to a historic house on Abram Street, where it continues to promote and sell works by artists living in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The only commercial fine art gallery in Arlington, it has found an audience for paintings in a range of styles from current-traditional to challenging contemporary. It has a strong collection of contemporary ceramics. It often takes a chance on emerging young artists, but it also has on hand a sampling of works by some of the important Texas artist it represented during the seventies and eighties The Gallery offers art classes and workshops in the old house that stand behind it that draw artists from all over the world.
